Citizens Initiative for saving water bodies in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, once known as a City of lakes, may soon be water stressed. Water bodies of the city are shrinking in their size, degrading, and many-a-times “disappearing” entirely.
Lack of comprehensive knowledge, understanding of urban watersheds and vision by urban planners, developers and policy makers is the primary root cause for present status of lakes. Consequently, most of the present urban lakes have been transformed into ‘Toxic Lakes’ and facilitate in polluting the ground water sources through percolation.
SOUL is a city based platform and network that connects all serious efforts that have been done in the past, are currently being carried on and proposed in the future in this area. It was formally launched on 12th June 2010 and is a non- funded and non- registered network based entirely on voluntary efforts of anyone or any organization that feels strongly about the issue and is open to all who are committed to the cause of protecting, rehabilitating and promoting the cause of water bodies in Hyderabad. Ideas, suggestions, contributions of time and energy of all members comprising the network sustain its activities and establish its credibility. Constructive collaboration as well as shrewd negotiation with government agencies in public interest for policies, programs and projects pertaining to water bodies is proposed as a strategy for connecting with systems of public governance. The network is visualized as a civil society venture to ensure social watch on a precious and life giving resource as urban water space. Activities include advocacy, research, resistance against violating forces & collaboration with those that support revitalizing the urban water spaces in Hyderabad.
