Citizens Initiative for saving water bodies in Hyderabad
Degradation of all varieties of water bodies in the city of Hyderabad has been going on at an accelerated pace since sharp growth of the city in recent decades. Many of the urban lakes were created by design to provide a water source, act as a storage, a recharge mechanism, flood control measure by accommodating flood flows, enabling pleasant weather for human and natural habitations, act as a conduit in the hydrological cycle to provide long term water security to all living beings around them. It appears now that they are being destroyed through damaging actions, silently watching the destruction and failure to take positively protective actions.
As public assets – while state agencies are responsible for safeguarding water bodies from illegitimate appropriation – it is equally the responsibility and mandate of citizens to raise their voice of concern in case of persistent violation of such water spaces - that are a pre-condition of urban survival.
Creating a city based platform by initiating the present network SOUL is an attempt to connect all efforts that have been done in the past, are currently being carried on and proposed in the future to resist the present dismal situation. It is based entirely on voluntary efforts of anyone or any organization that feels strongly about the issue and is open to all who are committed to the cause of protecting, rehabilitating and promoting water bodies in Hyderabad.
The network is visualized as a civil society venture to ensure social watch on a precious and life giving resource as urban water space. Activities include advocacy, research, resistance against violating forces & collaboration with those that support revitalizing the urban water spaces in Hyderabad.
SOUL is Celebrating it's 3rd Anniversary on 12th June.
